IPPT window timing & annual requirements
Many NSmen are unsure when their IPPT window starts or ends. Some are worried about missing the deadline, booking too late, or not knowing what happens if they fail to pass in time. The rules are fixed, but most people only learn them when the window is already closing.
This guide explains how the IPPT window works, how your first window is set, and what counts as fulfilling your annual requirement. It also covers booking rules, exemptions, and what happens at window close. Everything is written in a simple way so you can follow the rules without confusion.

Quick Summary
Window Period
The IPPT window runs from 1 April to 31 March, and all attempts must be within this period.
First Window
A NSman’s first window starts on the first birthday after ORD, unless the birthday falls before ORD.
Annual Requirement
Annual requirement is met by passing IPPT or completing 10 NS FIT sessions.
Booking Rules
IPPT sessions are booked through OneNS, with rules on reporting time and attire.
Fail & No‑Attempt Outcomes
If you fail or make no attempt, the next window requires mandatory NS FIT, and default cases may face investigation.
Exemptions
Medical exemptions, PES B3 and below, or recognised disruption can lift the requirement for that window.
Legal Responsibility
IPPT is a legal obligation, and NSmen must track and manage their own bookings.
Understanding the IPPT Annual Window
The IPPT annual window is a 12-month cycle aligned with Singapore’s financial year, running from 1 April to 31 March. Eligible NSmen must complete their yearly fitness requirement within this period. The window gives flexibility to book IPPT or NS FIT sessions at any point in the year, and extensions are not allowed once the window closes.
The IPPT window sets the timeframe in which NSmen must complete their yearly fitness requirement. It follows a fixed financial-year cycle, so everyone has the same schedule regardless of vocation or unit. This structure helps NSmen plan bookings and training in a steady and predictable way.
The SAF uses the financial-year format so booking loads, planning cycles, and administrative checks stay consistent across all Fitness Conditioning Centres. You can estimate your passing chances using the IPPT Calculator.

What is an IPPT Window?
The IPPT window is the period in which a NSman must complete the annual fitness requirement. It applies to NSmen who are still within their ORNS liability. All attempts, exemptions, or NS FIT sessions must fall within these dates to count.
What Counts as an IPPT Attempt?
An IPPT attempt is recorded when a NSman reports for a scheduled IPPT session and begins the test, even if he does not complete all stations or does not achieve a passing score. A failed attempt still counts as an attempt for the window. Booking a session but not turning up does not count as an attempt.
Financial-Year Alignment (1 April to 31 March)
The IPPT cycle uses the national financial year. Every window starts on 1 April and ends on 31 March the following year. Attempts made in this range count toward that year’s requirement.
Why the Window Exists?
The window keeps yearly fitness assessments consistent across the force. It gives enough time for NSmen to plan their sessions and reduces the risk of last-minute issues that may lead to non-compliance.
To understand how points are calculated for each station, see the full IPPT Scoring System.
How the first IPPT window Is calculated?
A NSman’s first IPPT window begins on the first birthday after completing Operationally Ready Date (ORD). If the birthday falls before ORD, the first window begins on the birthday in the following year. This rule sets the first full fitness cycle before the move to the financial-year window.
The first IPPT window depends on how a NSman’s birthday falls in relation to the ORD date. This is a one-time calculation that ensures a full 12-month period for the first cycle. After this, all NSmen follow the 1 April to 31 March financial-year cycle.
Go to IPPT CalculatorIf Birthday Falls After ORD
If the birthday comes after the ORD date, the first IPPT window begins on that birthday and lasts for one year.
If Birthday Falls Before ORD
If the birthday is before ORD, the first window starts on the birthday in the following year. This prevents a shortened first cycle.
Practical Examples of First-Window Start & End
ORD in March, birthday in May → First window runs from May that year to May the next year. ORD in March, birthday in February → First window starts in February the following year.
First IPPT Window Calculation
| Scenario | ORD Timing | Birthday Timing | First IPPT Window Start | First IPPT Window End |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ORD in March, Birthday in May | ORD before birthday | Birthday after ORD | May (same year) | May (next year) |
| ORD in March, Birthday in February | Birthday before ORD | Next birthday applies | February (next year) | February (following year) |
| ORD in July, Birthday in August | Birthday after ORD | Birthday after ORD | August (same year) | August (next year) |
| ORD in July, Birthday in April | Birthday before ORD | Next birthday applies | April (next year) | April (following year) |
Annual Fulfilment Requirements
A NSman completes the annual requirement by passing IPPT or finishing 10 NS FIT sessions, which include one IPPT attempt. A passing score requires at least one point in every station and 51 points in total. All attempts must take place within the window to count for the year.
There are two approved ways to fulfil the annual requirement. NSmen may either pass IPPT or complete the 10-session NS FIT programme. NS FIT exists as an alternative for those who are unable to achieve a passing score within the year.

What Counts as Fulfilling the Annual Requirement
A NSman is considered compliant for the year when any of the following is completed during the window:
- A passing IPPT result
- Completion of 10 NS FIT sessions (which include one IPPT attempt)
Minimum Pass Conditions
A passing IPPT requires at least one point in each station and at least 51 total points.
Approved Locations for Taking IPPT
IPPT can be taken at Fitness Conditioning Centres, during In-Camp Training, or at approved partner facilities such as HomeTeamNS gyms or ActiveSG gyms. Availability depends on booking slots released in OneNS.
Voluntary vs Mandatory NS FIT
NS FIT can be taken in two ways. Voluntary NS FIT may be started within the IPPT window by NSmen who choose this route instead of attempting to pass IPPT. Mandatory NS FIT applies when a NSman either fails to pass IPPT by the end of the window or makes no attempt at all. Mandatory NS FIT must be completed in the next IPPT window and includes 10 sessions with one IPPT attempt.
Booking & Administrative Rules
IPPT and NS FIT sessions are booked through the OneNS portal, with slots released up to three months ahead. NSmen must report 15 minutes before the session and meet attire rules set by the venue. Amendments and cancellations depend on booking rules and available slots.
Booking rules ensure that NSmen can access fitness sessions in an orderly way throughout the year. These rules help avoid last-minute congestion and support planning across different training facilities.
Booking Through OneNS (3-Month Advance Window)
OneNS allows viewing and booking of sessions up to three months in advance. Early booking provides more choice and avoids peak-period issues toward the end of the window.
Amendments, Cancellations & Restrictions
Changes are allowed within booking system limits. NSmen should cancel early if they cannot attend. Restrictions may apply near the session date depending on centre policies.
No-Show and Late Cancellation Consequences
NSmen who fail to turn up for a booked IPPT or NS FIT session without cancelling in advance may face temporary booking restrictions. No-shows do not count as IPPT attempts and do not fulfil any part of the annual requirement.
Reporting Time & Attire Requirements
NSmen must report 15 minutes before the scheduled session for checks. Running shoes, suitable shorts, and appropriate tops are required. Those not meeting attire rules may be turned away.
Window Closure Outcomes
When the IPPT window closes, the outcome depends on whether the NSman passed, attempted, or made no attempt. A pass completes the requirement. Attempting but not passing leads to mandatory NS FIT in the next window. Making no attempt results in default status and may lead to further action.
Window closure determines whether the NSman met the requirement for that year. All attempts must be made before the closing date. Outcomes differ based on whether the NSman passed, attempted, or did not attempt at all.
If You Pass Before Window Closes
A passing score completes the requirement. No further action is needed until the next cycle begins.
If You Fail But Attempt Within the Window
Multiple attempts are allowed. If the NSman does not pass before the window closes, the next window will require mandatory NS FIT.
Mandatory NS FIT if You Do Not Pass by Window Close
Mandatory NS FIT requires 10 sessions. The programme includes one IPPT attempt. Completing all sessions fulfils the requirement for that window.
What Happens if You Default (No Attempt Made)
Not attempting IPPT at all leads to default status. NSmen may be called for investigation and will also be required to complete mandatory NS FIT in the next window.
Defaulting on IPPT without a valid exemption is an offence under the Enlistment Act. NSmen who default may be called up for investigation and may face disciplinary action such as warnings, fines, or other penalties depending on the outcome of the investigation.
Window Closure Outcomes
| Situation at Window Close | Outcome | Next Window Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Passed IPPT | Requirement fulfilled | Normal window applies |
| Attempted but did not pass | Requirement not fulfilled | Mandatory NS FIT (10 sessions) |
| No attempt made | Default status | Investigation + Mandatory NS FIT |
| Exempted (medical/service) | Requirement lifted | No carry-over |

Window-Based Exemptions
Exemptions apply when NSmen meet approved medical or service conditions. A continuous medical exemption of six months or an accumulated exemption of nine months removes the annual requirement. NSmen who are downgraded to PES B3 or below, or who are disrupted, are also exempt for that window.
Exemption rules apply only when certain medical or service conditions are met within the same window. These exemptions apply only to that year and do not carry forward automatically.
Medical Exemption Thresholds
| Type of Exemption | Duration Within Same Window | Annual Requirement Status |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous Medical Exemption | ≥ 6 months | Requirement lifted |
| Accumulated Medical Exemption | ≥ 9 months | Requirement lifted |
| Partial exemption | < 6 months or < 9 months | Requirement still applies |
Medical Exemptions (Continuous or Accumulated)
A continuous exemption of six months or a combined exemption of nine months in the same window removes the requirement for that cycle.
PES B3 & Below – Window Exemption
NSmen downgraded to PES B3 or below (excluding PES C1, as PES C1 personnel may still be required to attempt modified IPPT depending on medical classification) do not need to fulfil IPPT requirements for that window.
Disruption & IPPT Window Exemption
During recognised disruptions from ORNS duties, NSmen are not required to meet IPPT obligations for that window.
If you want a complete breakdown of who must take IPPT and who is exempt, visit the IPPT Eligibility Guide.
Compliance, Responsibility & Legal Context
IPPT is part of a NSman’s obligations under the Enlistment Act. NSmen must track their own fitness requirement because SAF100 notifications are not issued for IPPT. A reminder SMS may be sent at the start of the window, but each NSman must book and complete his own sessions.
IPPT obligations are defined in law, and NSmen must meet their annual requirement unless exempted. Units do not issue SAF100 notices for IPPT, so NSmen must monitor their own deadlines and bookings through OneNS.
IPPT as a Gazetted Requirement
The IPPT requirement is set under the Enlistment Act. NSmen must meet it each year unless formally exempted.
No SAF100 Notifications for IPPT
Unlike call-ups, SAF100 notifications are not used for IPPT. NSmen may receive a reminder at the start of the window, but must still manage their own bookings.
ORNS Contribution Overview (High-Level Context)
IPPT attempts at Fitness Conditioning Centres may count toward ORNS liability for the first three sessions. Attempts during ICT are counted within ICT.
Are There Any Changes to IPPT Window Rules in 2026?
Based on publicly available guidelines, there are no known changes to the IPPT window structure, first-window calculation, NS FIT requirements, or exemption thresholds for 2026. The financial-year window model and compliance rules remain unchanged.
